Musician and singer Bappi Lahiri, who popularized disco music in India in the 80s and 90s, passed away today at Criticare Hospital in Mumbai. He was 69 years old. Hospital director Dr Deepak Namjoshi told PTI that “Lahiri was admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But on Tuesday, his health deteriorated and his family took a doctor to their home. Called. He was again brought to the hospital. He had several health problems. He died shortly before midnight due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).”
Bappi Lahiri, widely known as the “Disco King” in India, was born in Calcutta, West Bengal in 1952 into a family with a rich tradition in classical music. He started his career as a music director at the young age of 19. His father, Aparesh Lahiri was a renowned Bengali singer and his mother, Bansari Lahiri was a musician and a singer who was well versed in classical music and Shyama Sangeet.
He got her first opportunity to sing a song in the Bengali film, Dadu (1972). However, he started making his place in Hindi films with the film Nanha Shikari (1973). He established himself in Bollywood with Tahir Hussain’s Hindi film, Zakhmi (1975) and made a mark as a playback singer.
The singer recently remixed his hit song ‘Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re’ titled ‘Are Pyaar Kar Le’ for Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar starrer ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’. The song was originally picturized on Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh in Anil Ganguly’s Saheb. Popular in the late 1970s–80s for soundtracks such as Disco Dancer, Namak Halal and Dance Dance, they helped better integrate synthesized disco music with Indian cinema.
