As part of its efforts to step up the SUV game, Maruti Suzuki is all set to introduce new models next year. At least two of them are going to be unveiled next month at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023. One of them is expected to be a 5-door version of its popular Jimny SUV. There is a smaller 3-door version of the off-roader SUV that is currently sold in some of Suzuki’s global markets. It was showcased at the Auto Expo in the year 2020 to get feedback from potential customers. This time though, Maruti is serious about the longer version of the Jimny and is planning to launch it in India soon.
The recently spotted five-door model comes in its iconic Kinetic Yellow body color and matching door handles. The large wheel arches, bumpers, ORVMs and side cladding are all finished in black plastic. The test model also reveals that there will be no taillights on the sides of the SUV. Instead, they are placed lower inside the bumper. However, it is not clear whether this is the production version of the Jimny 5-door or not.
Being the longer wheelbase version of the Jimny 3-door SUV, the 5-door model is expected to offer more space on the inside. The wheelbase is expected to be around 2,500 mm, which is at least 300 mm longer than the smaller version. The overall length of the SUV is likely to remain under 4 metres. The rear door handles will open to the side, pointing to the jump seats in the third row. The second row is likely to get bench seats.
The Maruti Jimny is likely to get the new generation K15B series engine. The engine is likely to come mated to a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission unit. Apart from a standard version, it is also expected to offer the recently launched AllGrip four-wheel drive technology to take on rivals.
