In the last few months, several incidents of fire in electric scooters have come to the fore. A father and daughter died in Tamil Nadu when an electric scooter in their house caught fire, suffocating them. In addition, there have been several incidents of fire in Okinawa and Ola electric scooters. In such a situation, the question arises that why do electric scooters-bikes or cars catch fire and how to avoid it?
Why do electric scooters catch fire?
Lithium-ion batteries fail mainly for two different reasons. The first reason is the shortfall that occurs while making the battery. Many factors can be behind the second reason, such as some stress on the battery like vibration, short circuit, or any such reason. A manufacturing defect in the battery can also cause a fire. At the same time, lithium-ion batteries can also become a victim of fire due to excessive vibration.
How to prevent fire in electric vehicle?
- The incident of fire in electric vehicles is rare and it is not as risky as petrol two-wheelers. However, when a lithium-ion battery catches fire, it is quite difficult to combat it.
- The battery should not be charged immediately after a long journey, as the lithium-ion cells inside the battery are very hot during that time. Let the battery cool down and then charge it.
- Always use the same battery that the vehicle is designed for. Using cheap local batteries can also damage the electric vehicle. Also, use the charging cable that came with the vehicle.
- Never place the battery in direct sunlight. Remove the charger when the battery is fully charged.
- Before using the battery, check that there is no damage. If the battery feels very hot, avoid using it.
